Carlos Turro is M.D. and Ph.D. from the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (UPV). He is working there since 1992 and, since 2000, has been Head of its Media Services unit. From there, he has been working in different responsible Open Source projects related to Education, and also coordinating the MOOC project of UPV.
Current interests involve video for education, within the Apereo Opencast project, where UPV is developing the OS video player for lectures “Paella Player”, used by more than 100 Higher educational institutions in the world, and Content production, where UPV’s MOOC project has been running since 2013 and has developed more than 150 different courses, 600 editions and 3 million student enrollments, both on the edX and UPV[x] platforms.

Abstract
Opencast is an open-source video recording and distribution system specifically designed for academic institutions and organizations that want to capture, process, and distribute educational video content. It provides tools and services for recording conferences, presentations, classes, and other events in video format and then processing and distributing the resulting content in various formats.
Opencast offers features such as automatic video and audio capture, metadata management, content indexing, basic video editing, and integration with learning management systems (LMS) and media repositories. It allows educational institutions to create online video content libraries and facilitate access through digital platforms.
It has been deployed in more than one hundred Higher education institutions and has a vibrant ecosystem of tools. Recently the community has developed a new video portal (Tobira) an updated player focusing in accessibility (Paella Player), a new personal recorder, and an updated video editor. Being an open-source platform, Opencast also enables collaboration and customization according to the needs of each institution. It also has an active community of developers and users who contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of the system.
In my talk I will present the new & updated capabilities of the system, and I will argue about how important is to have an Open Source video platform specially targeted for lectures.
